Federal Agency After Trump Tweet: ‘Winter Storms Don’t Prove That Global Warming Isn’t Happening’
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tweeted a photo on Tuesday showing that winter storms do not disprove climate change hours after President Trump mockingly asked for “global warming” to “please come back” as a brutal winter storm brings life-threatening low temperatures to the midwest this week.
“Winter storms don’t prove that global warming isn’t happening,” NOAA tweeted from its main climate change-related account, which is associated with its Climate.gov website.
The tweet included a drawing showing “warmer ocean temperatures” fueling stronger winter storms and linked to a 2015 post on NOAA’s website explaining that even with climate change, certain locations will continue to experience “winters that are unusually cold and snowy.”

Monday night, Trump tweeted about a “polar vortex” that is forecast to bring the coldest air seen in decades to the Midwest to the Northeast this week, with at least 55 million people facing temperatures at zero or below by the end of the week.
“In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming [sic]? Please come back fast, we need you!” Trump tweeted Monday.
Trump has repeatedly mocked global warming when temperatures turn frigid, including in a tweet earlier this month, writing of another storm, “Wouldn’t be bad to have a little of that good old fashioned Global Warming right now!.”
Trump’s tweet was met with scorn and ridicule on social media, with many noting that Sydney, Australia, is currently experiencing its hottest January on record:
Jesus Christ you’re stupid.

Global Warming is real.
Your bone spurs are not.
Scientists laugh at you.
Actually, everyone with a brain does.
You’re an idiot.— Tommy Campbell (@MrTommyCampbell) January 29, 2019
It’s called #climatechange not global warming. The climate is changing because of carbon emissions. Mar a lago will sink into the ocean. You’ll watch it one day.

If you cared about facts, you would know that climate change doesn’t only cause temperatures to increase. Climate change causes both cold and hot extremes.

Meanwhile, Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest Navy base, floods 10 times a year.
It's a national security threat caused by climate change that will cost DOD billions, but the commander-in-chief doesn't even believe it's happening https://t.co/VKvSIbizw4

In case you forgot, we also had record high temperatures this summer!
