After initially refusing to remove a post by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos celebrating the recent mail bombs sent to prominent Democratic officials, Instagram reversed course and deleted the post reported by The Daily Beast’s Will Sommer.
“Just catching up with news of all these pipe bombs,” Yiannopoulos captioned a selfie on Thursday afternoon.
“Disgusting and sad (that they didn’t go off, and the daily beast didn’t get one),” he added.
According to The Daily Beast, Instagram initially declined to take the post down after it was reported for hate speech because the company found it did “not violate our Community Guidelines.”
“This content violates our policies and has been removed from Instagram and Facebook,” Instagram spokeswoman Stephanie Noon said in an email after reversing course two hours later. “We prohibit celebration or praise of crimes committed, and we will remove content praising a bombing attempt as soon as we’re aware.”
Yiannopoulos was banned from Twitter in 2016.
