Illinois Senate Passes Measure To Label White Nationalists And Neo-Nazi Groups As Terrorists
The Illinois Senate on Sunday approved a resolution calling on law enforcement officials to label white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups as terrorist organizations in the wake of the deadly violence in Charlottesville this past weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a man with reported ties to the white supremacist movement plowed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters in Charlottesville, VA. on Saturday.
The alleged driver, James Alex Fields Jr., 20, has been charged with second-degree murder in the deadly crash.
State Sen. Don Harmon (D), who sponsored the measure, said it was “vital that we stand in total opposition to the hatred, bigotry and violence displayed by the white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups in Charlottesville this past weekend.”
“They are the heirs of the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazis. We fought two bloody wars in opposition to their ideologies. We must continue to fight those same twisted ideologies today,” he tweeted Sunday. “Diversity has always and will always make America stronger and better.”
