White Nationalists Storm DC Bookstore, Chanting ‘This Land Is Our Land’ As Customers Boo

A group of self-proclaimed white nationalists interrupted an appearance by an author at Politics and Prose bookstore in northwest Washington, D.C., on Saturday, the Washington Post reported.

The group targeted author Jonathan M. Metzl, a psychiatrist and director of the Center for Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt University, who was discussing his new book, “Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland.”

The group reportedly chanted, “This land is our land” before being booed by event attendees.

One unidentified man with a megaphone reportedly said that Metzl “would have the white working class trade their homeland for handouts.”

“But we, as nationalists and identitarians, can offer the workers of this country a homeland, their birthright, in addition to health care, good jobs and so forth,” he said amid a chorus of boos, according to the Post.

According to the Post, Metzl’s book discusses how lower- and middle-class white Americans are drawn to politicians who promise to improve their lives, but at the same time support policies that place them at greater risk of illness and death.

“The audience was not particularly receptive,” store co-owner Bradley Graham explained. “We just let them have their say, expecting they would leave, and they did.”

Metzl told the Post that the crowd was surprised and described the disruption as “intense.”

“It was pretty intense. I think everyone was really surprised,” he said. “I get lots of threats on voice mail, but this was the first time in person.” He added that the group appeared well-organized.

After starting the “this is our land” chant, the group of ten white men then walked out of the bookstore.
