Vermont’s Republican Governor Backs Trump Impeachment Inquiry

Vermont’s Republican Governor Backs Trump Impeachment Inquiry

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) has become the first Republican governor to come out in support of an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

Scott said Wednesday that while he believes the House’s formal impeachment inquiry against Trump is “appropriate” and that Congress has a “solemn responsibility” to uphold the constitutional practice of checks and balances, the Associated Press reports.

He noted that there are still many unknown details surrounding reports that Trump repeatedly pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, and the formal impeachment process “should not be taken lightly or abused.”

A five-page summary transcript of Trump’s July 25 phone call with Zelensky shows that Trump urged Zelensky to speak with his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, and “look into” his unsubstantiated allegations against Biden.

Other moderate Republican governors have yet to weigh in on an impeachment inquiry into the president.

Trump took to Twitter on Thursday to blast the impeachment inquiry as “THE GREATEST SCAM IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLITICS!”

The president also warned that the “markets would crash” if he were impeached.
