Up To 18 People Shot, Multiple Fatalities Reported After El Paso Mall Mass Shooting: Police

A mass shooting near a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas, has resulted in multiple fatalities, with at least 18 people transported to local hospitals, the El Paso Police Department confirmed to NBC News.

At least one person is in custody, El Paso Police Sgt. Enrique Castillo told reporters, and authorities don’t believe there is an ongoing threat at this point.

A University Medical Center of El Paso spokesman said they had received at least 10 victims with “level one” injuries, which is the most serious level, spokesman Ryan Mielke said. Mielke also confirmed that multiple victims have been taken to different hospitals in the area.

Multiple victims were earlier reported injured at a Walmart, according to CNN affiliate KTSM. Graphic video shared to social media confirmed that report.

A video shared to Facebook by El Paso resident Sylvia Saucedo shows several shoppers hiding under tables as a high powered weapon could be heard firing in the distance.

Saucedo writes: “What a horrible experience !!!! Shooting at Walmart de Cielo Vista !! My mom and I are at the table recording because 911 never answered us.”

Walmart issued a statement in light of the shooting at an El Paso shopping center.

“We’re in shock over the tragic events at Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, where store 2201 & club 6502 are located,” the retailer said. “We’re praying for the victims, the community & our associates, as well as the first responders. We’re working closely with law enforcement & will update as appropriate.”

Democratic hopeful and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg tweeted, “My grandmother used to take me to Cielo Vista Mall. Now it’s one more mass shooting scene. How many more must grieve before we act?

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate responded to the news of the shooting on Twitter.

“Truly heartbreaking. Stay safe, El Paso. Please follow directions of emergency personnel as we continue to get more updates,” he wrote.
