Undocumented Immigrant Acquitted In Kate Steinle Murder Case, A Favorite Trump Rallying Cry

Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who was charged with the murder and manslaughter of Kate Steinle, was acquitted by a San Francisco jury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The 2015 death of 32-year old Kathryn Steinle, who was fatally wounded while walking at Pier 14 in San Francisco by a felon who had been deported to Mexico on five previous occasions, was widely politicized by Republicans and President Trump, who ran on tougher immigration and greater border security.

Trump frequently mentioned Steinle’s case on the campaign trail and even featured her case in his speech at the Republican National Convention last summer when he accepted the party’s presidential nomination.

The Hill added:

The convention featured speeches from parents whose children were killed by immigrants in the U.S. illegally, and the White House has tried to keep a focus on the issue since then.

Three of first lady Melania Trump’s guests at the president’s address to Congress in February were people who had family members killed by undocumented immigrants.

During his address to Congress, Trump announced a new Homeland Security office called Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) to assist victims of crimes committed by immigrants in the country illegally.

In June, the House passed “Kate’s Law,” increasing the maximum penalties for undocumented immigrants who enter the country illegally multiple times after they have already been deported.
