Twitter Bans GOP Candidate Over Post Calling For Rep. Ilhan Omar To Be ‘Hanged’

Twitter has permanently suspended a campaign account belonging to Republican Danielle Stella, who is running to unseat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) in 2020, after her account shared lynching comments about the freshman congresswoman.

“The account was permanently suspended for repeated violations of the Twitter Rules,” a spokesperson for Twitter told The Hill late Wednesday.

In one tweet reported by The Washington Times, Stella’s campaign account wrote that Omar “should be tried for #treason and hanged” if it was “proven @IlhanMN passed sensitive info to Iran.”

The tweet was referring to conspiracy theories that have spread across right-wing media outlets claiming Omar gave sensitive information to the Iranian government.

“Since the day she was elected, Saudi Arabian trolls and mouthpieces have targeted Omar with misinformation and conspiracy theories,” a spokesperson for Omar told the Jerusalem Post this month:

In another tweet, Stella’s Twitter account shared a link to an outlet that wrote about her initial remark while accompanying the post with an image of a stick figure being hanged.

On a webpage outlining its rules, the platform said “violence, harassment and other similar types of behavior discourage people from expressing themselves, and ultimately diminish the value of global public conversation.”

“Our rules are to ensure all people can participate in the public conversation freely and safely,” it adds.

“Since the day I won my first primary election against a 44yr incumbent in 2016, misinformation and conspiracy theories have become part of my daily existence. The stories keep getting outlandishly absurd, and this latest one is no exception!” Omar tweeted in response to the Iranian theory.

“People often ask me why I don’t fight back against them often. It’s a valid question, one my team, family and I struggle with,” she added. “There is just too much, they are too ridiculous and it feel degrading to respond to such stupidity. Also, who has time fact checking this insanity.”
