Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” Border Wall Estimated To Cost $70 Billion, Three Times The Initial Estimate

Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” Border Wall Estimated To Cost $70 Billion, Three Times The Initial Estimate

Donald Trump’s plans to build a “big, beautiful” border wall could cost more than three times as much as initial estimates, Senate Democrats said in a report released on Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

The report found that Trump’s wall could cost nearly $70 billion to build and $150 million a year to maintain. Democrats also said that the Trump administration has yet to provide Congress with any evidence to show that a wall would be effective in stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs.

The Times adds:

An internal report by the Department of Homeland Security said the wall could cost about $21.6 billion, not including maintenance.

The new report, which was prepared by the Democratic staff of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, also found that the construction of a wall would require taking hundreds of acres of private land at a cost of millions to taxpayers and would divert money from crucial mobile video surveillance technology.

“The staff just wanted to summarize where we are at this point, given the lack of substantive answers coming from the administration,” said Drew Pusateri, a spokesman for the Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri and ranking member on the committee.

Trump’s own Homeland Security secretary, John F. Kelly, has been vocal about his views that a border wall with Mexico “won’t work.”

At Kelly’s confirmation hearing this month, the retired general said a “physical barrier will not do the job” when asked by senators about his views on a border wall.

“I believe the defense of the southwest border starts 1,500 miles south and that is partnering with great countries as far south as Peru who are very cooperative with us in terms of getting after the drug production transport,” he said.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to build a wall and “make Mexico pay for it”. He said he would build an “impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall” between the US and Mexico.

In his budget request to Congress, Trump asked for $1.4 billion to pay for the initial development for the wall. The Mexican government has made it clear it is not going to give a dime to the United States for the wall’s construction.

More than 230 companies have already submitted proposal to build border wall prototypes, according to the Customs and BOrder Protection agency.
