Trump Has Yet To Acknowledge Victims Of Deadly California Mudslides As Death Toll Rises To 17

Rescue crews on Friday continued digging through the wall of mud and debris to search for survivors in Montecito, California after a storm triggered devastating mudslides early Tuesday morning.

The death toll rose to 17 by Friday morning, and the number of missing people in Santa Barbara County was lowered to five. Twenty-eight people were reported injured.

About 100 homes were completely destroyed and another 300 were badly damaged, according to The New York Times.

Days before disaster struck, Santa Barbara County officials issued repeated warnings via social media, news media and emails about the potential for mudslides after wildfires scarred the land weeks earlier.

President Trump has yet to publicly acknowledge the deadly mudslides.

Trump has instead spent his Friday responding on Twitter to reports that he referred to Haiti, El Salvador and other African nations as “shithole countries” during a Thursday meeting with lawmakers.

“Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said “take them out.” Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!” Trump tweeted.

Trump also falsely claimed that the Obama Administration had sold the US embassy in London.

As NBC News notes, “The Obama administration, for example, wasn’t responsible for changing the location of the embassy; the decision was initiated under George W. Bush’s administration.”
