Trump Used Her Slain Daughter To Attack ‘Illegal’ Immigrants. She Took In Child Of Mexican Immigrants

The mother of Mollie Tibbetts, a 20-year-old Iowa college student who was allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant earlier this year, adopted the child of Mexican immigrants who fled town after the man accused of killing her daughter was arrested.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Laura Calderwood said she had taken in Ulises Felix, 17, after his parents fled town following Cristhian Bahena Rivera’s arrest.

Felix wished to stay in Brooklyn, Iowa, so he could finish high school. In his parents’ absence, Calderwood took in the teenager and now lives with her son, Tibbetts’s younger brother, Scott.

The newspaper reported that Felix’s parents had worked alongside Rivera at the same dairy farm for years. The teen told the Post that his parents “took care of” Rivera “for a while,” adding that his mother fed him every day.

“He was so busy sending money back to his parents, trying to help them build a house,” Felix said.

The Hill adds:

Calderwood told Felix she was unaware of the relationship between his family and Rivera, asking Felix whether Rivera had any family in the country. Felix responded that he knew only of Rivera having an uncle and aunt.

“I mean, that’s…” Calderwood began. “I’m glad he had someone as a mother figure to look after him,” she said, referring to Felix’s mother. “If he didn’t have any family here to speak of.”

Calderwood, a lifelong liberal, according to the Post, told the paper that she hated hearing President Trump say her daughter’s name in the days after her death. Trump, after Tibbetts’s death, accused Rivera of being an “illegal alien.”

“You heard about today with the illegal alien coming in, very sadly, from Mexico and you saw what happened to that incredible, beautiful young woman,” he said at the time. “Should’ve never happened. … The laws are so bad, the immigration laws are such a disgrace. We’re getting it changed, but we have to get more Republicans.”

Tibbetts’s body was found in August after she had been missing for more than a month. Her cause of death in a preliminary report was listed as a “homicide resulting from multiple sharp force injuries,” the Iowa State Medical Examiner told CNN.

The Trump administration seized on Tibbetts’s death to call for stricter immigration laws.

Tibbetts’s family has issued repeated calls urging lawmakers and the president not to use Tibbetts’s death as a “pawn” in the immigration debate.
