Trump Threatens To Cancel Daily Press Briefings Because Spokespeople Can’t Speak With ‘Perfect Accuracy’

President Trump threatened to cancel “all future ‘press briefings'” while defending a slew of contradictions in the White House’s account of FBI Director James Comey’s firing, suggesting via Twitter that he might instead replace the briefings with written statements “for the sake of accuracy.”

“As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy!” Trump tweeted.

Trump, in an exclusive interview Thursday with NBC News’ Lester Holt, renewed his attack on former FBI chief James Comey, calling him a “showboat” and a “grandstander” and revealed he asked Comey whether he was under investigation for alleged ties to Russia.

Vice President Mike Pence and White House spokespeople including Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway and Sarah Huckabee Sanders all explained to multiple news outlets late Tuesday that Trump’s decision to dismiss Comey came as a result of a recommendation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Trump threw Pence and his White House communications under the bus on Thursday when he told NBC News that “regardless of recommendation I was going to fire Comey.”

The Hill adds:

But that claim has been met with raised eyebrows in Washington. Bureau officials, speaking to the press, have contradicted Trump’s claims on several points.
Officials told NBC that the White House requested the dinner meeting, not Comey. A former senior official said that Comey would never have told the president he was not under investigation.

“Two people who have heard his account of the dinner,” told The New York Times that Trump asked Comey to pledge his political loyalty at the dinner but was rebuffed by Comey, who promised honesty but not loyalty.
