Trump Suggests NYPD Should Have Waited For Statue Of Liberty Protester To Jump Instead Of Arresting Her

President Trump on Thursday ripped into a female protester who scaled the Statue of Liberty in protest of his administration’s immigration policies, suggesting NYPD officers should have gotten “some nets” and waited for “that clown” to jump instead of arresting her.

Therese Patricia Okoumou, 44, scaled Lady Liberty on Wednesday while wearing an anti-Trump t-shirt to bring attention to the administration’s “zero tolerance” practice.

“You saw that clown yesterday on the Statue of Liberty,” Trump said to roaring cheers from the crowd in Great Falls, Montana. “You see the guys that went up there? I wouldn’t have done it. I would have said let’s get some nets and wait until she comes down. Just get some nets.”

Trump went on to commend the officers who arrested the protester.

“You see the bravery of them doing that,” he said. “What a group.”

Okoumo, who wore a black t-shirt emblazoned with the words “Trump Care Makes Us Sick,” triggered an emergency evacuation of Liberty Island after she scaled the 132-year-old statue.

The Congolese immigrant, who pleaded not guilty to federal trespassing and disorderly conduct charges on Thursday, revealed that her stunt was inspired by a former First Lady.

“Michelle Obama — our beloved First Lady that I care so much about — said, ‘when they go low, we go high,’ and I went as high as I could,” Okoumo told reporters outside Manhattan Federal Court.
