Trump Lashes Out After Reporter Asks Him To His Face: ‘Why Did You Lie To The American People?’

ABC News White House Correspondent Jon Karl asked President Trump why he lied to the American people a day after Bob Woodward released tapes revealing Trump intentionally downplayed the coronavirus, a move he claims was his attempt to not cause “panic.”

“Thank you, Mr. President. Why did you lie to the American people? And why should we trust what you have to say now?” Karl asked the president.

“Such a terrible question and the phraseology,” Trump said as he shook his head side-to-side. “I didn’t lie. What I said is we have to be calm, we can’t be panicked.”

“And your question, the way you phrased that, it’s a disgrace,” Trump added. “It’s a disgrace to ABC Television network, it’s a disgrace to your employer. And that’s the answer.”

“You told [Woodward] that you knew it was deadlier than the flu and you went out and told the American public that this was just like the flu … You told everybody else something else,” said Karl.

After again lashing out at Karl’s question, Trump said: “I think we did a great job.”

“I don’t want to jump up and down and start screaming: ‘Death, Death,'” Trump added, attempting to explain why he publicly downplayed the threat posed by COVID-19.
