President Donald Trump on Sunday night told 60 Minutes’ Leslie Stahl that when it comes to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), he knows “more about” the alliance than his Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
“Is it true General Mattis said to you, ‘The reason for NATO and the reason for all these alliances is to prevent World War III?'” Stahl asked.
“No, it’s not true. … Frankly, I like General Mattis. I think I know more about it than he does. And I know more about it from the standpoint of fairness, that I can tell you,” Trump replied.
“I’m gonna try one more time,” Stahl began.
Trump interrupted: “Lesley, you don’t have to try again. I know exactly what you’re saying. … I will always be there with NATO, but they have to pay their way. I’m fully in favor of NATO, but I don’t wanna be taken advantage of.”
STAHL: You have also slapped tariffs on our allies.
TRUMP: What's an ally? Nobody treats us worse than the European Union.

Trump also told Stahl that Mattis is “sort of a Democrat, if you wanna know the truth,” adding that “he may leave” the administration soon.
Trump insisted that he is “a good guy” and said that the two men still had “a very good relationship.”
