Trump Falsely Claims Minority Congresswomen Called US ‘Garbage,’ Called Jews ‘Evil’

President Trump on Friday repeatedly asserted that one of the four minority congresswomen he has targeted with racist attacks this week – Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) – had called the country “garbage,” but none of the lawmakers have ever used the term to describe the U.S.

“I don’t know if it’s good or bad politically. I don’t care,” Trump told reporters of his racist attack against the group of Democratic lawmakers.

“Many people say it’s good. I don’t know if it’s good or bad,” he continued. “I can tell you this: You can’t talk that way about our country. Not when I’m the president.”

Trump accused the four congresswomen of hating the United States and said Omar is “lucky to be where she is.”

“These women have said horrible things about our country and the people of our country. Nobody should be able to do that, and if they want to do that, that’s up to them,” Trump said as he left for New Jersey. “But I can’t imagine they’re going to do very well at the polls.”

“If the Democrats want to embrace people that hate our country… that’s up to them,” Trump continued. “But I don’t have to do that. I think what they say and what they’ve said is a disgrace to them, to the Democrats and, frankly, to our country.”

Trump repeatedly claimed that one of the congresswomen had called the country “garbage.”

A fact-check by The Hill and CNN found that none of the “lawmakers have used the term to describe the U.S. in its current form.”

Trump also falsely accused the Democratic congresswomen of using the phrase “evil Jews.”

“The first lady thinks that it’s horrible what they said about Israel and horrible what they said about our country, these congresswomen,” he added. “They cannot call our country and our people garbage. They can’t be anti-Semitic,” he told reporters. “They can’t talk about evil Jews, which is what they say, evil Jews. That’s what the first lady thinks.”

CNN’s fact-checker Daniel Dale noted that the congresswomen have never used the “evil Jews” phrase.
