President Donald Trump started the week with an early morning-Twitter tirade suggesting that instead of investigating his business dealings, the House Judiciary Committee should look into former President Barack Obama’s post-presidency book and Netflix deals.
Trump began by falsely claiming the House Judiciary Committee has “given up on the Mueller report.”
“House Judiciary has given up on the Mueller Report, sadly for them after two years and $40,000,000 spent – ZERO COLLUSION, ZERO OBSTRUCTION,” Trump tweeted. “So they say, OK, lets look at everything else, and all of the deals that “Trump” has done over his lifetime. But it doesn’t work that way.”
“I have a better idea,” the president tweeted. “Look at the Obama Book Deal, or the ridiculous Netflix deal. Then look at all the deals made by the Dems in Congress, the ‘Congressional Slush Fund,’ and lastly the IG Reports. Take a look at them. Those investigations would be over FAST!”

The use of government to investigate political opponents without credible evidence is a hallmark of an authoritarian leader. Is Trump seriously asking Congress to investigate Obama’s book deal or his production deal with Netflix? He and his supporters would likely say that his comments are only hyperbolic jokes used to expose what they see as an unfair investigation led by Mueller.
But joking about investigating political opponents…isn’t funny? Also, a very dangerous trend? That’s what Trump critics would quite reasonably say, and they would not be wrong.
The former president and first lady Michele Obama released the documentary “American Factory” last month, a joint venture with Netflix and their production company, Higher Ground.
In an angry oval office rant in August, Trump lashed out at probes into his 2016 campaign and Russian election interference, suggesting that investigators should open a probe into the Obama book deal.
“They want to investigate, they want to go fishing and I watched Bob Mueller and they have nothing,” Trump said of Democrats.
“It’s a disgrace,” he continued. “We want to find out what happened the last Democrat president. Let’s look into Obama the way they’ve looked into me. From day one they’ve looked into everything we’ve done.”
“They could look into the book deal that President Obama made. Let’s subpoena all of his records,” Trump continued. “Let’s subpoena all of the records having to do with Hillary Clinton and all of the nonsense that went on with Clinton and her foundation and everything else.”
