Trump Delays ICE Operation To Roundup Migrant Families By Two Weeks

President Trump announced on Saturday that he would delay for two weeks an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation that would have deported as many as 2,000 migrant families across 10 major US cities.

Trump claimed that the delay came at “the request of Democrats” and would allow for negotiations on Capitol Hill regarding immigration reform.

“At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border. If not, Deportations start!” Trump tweeted.

The weekend operation, which was first reported this week, was set to involve pre-dawn raids Sunday morning in cities with major immigrant communities, including Houston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

“The people that Ice will apprehend have already been ordered to be deported,” Trump tweeted on Saturday morning. “This means that they have run from the law and run from the courts. These are people that are supposed to go back to their home country. They broke the law by coming into the country, & now by staying.”

“When people come into our Country illegally, they will be DEPORTED!” he added in a subsequent tweet.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday pushed for Trump to halt the raids, which she called “heartless” and a “brutal action which will tear families apart and inject terror into our communities.”

“These families are hard-working members of our communities and our country. The President’s action makes no distinction between a status violation and committing a serious crime,” Pelosi said in a statement.

After Trump’s announcement was made, Pelosi tweeted, “Mr. President, delay is welcome. Time is needed for comprehensive immigration reform. Families belong together.”
