President Trump on Tuesday said he has no regrets over his racist attacks on House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and the city of Baltimore.
“I think I’m helping myself,” Trump told reporters while defending his string of racist attacks targeting lawmakers of color, claiming he is pointing out “the tremendous corruption” in cities like Baltimore.
“I’m the least racist person there is anywhere in the world,” Trump told reporters at the White House before traveling to Jamestown, Va.
On Saturday, Trump targeted Cummings when he described Baltimore, part of which is in Cummings’ district, as “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” He also claimed that “no human would want to live there” and that the district is “far worse and more dangerous” than conditions on the U.S. southern border with Mexico.
Trump again lashed out at civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton, calling him a “racist.”
Trump doubled down on blaming Cummings for the condition of some impoverished areas of Baltimore, alleging that billions of dollars were “stolen” and that the Maryland congressman has “been in charge,” even though he is not involved in city government.
Without citing specifics, Trump said that he has “received more phone calls” than on any other issue previously from Baltimore residents who have expressed gratitude for his comments.
“They’re largely African-American…They really appreciate what I’m doing and they’ve let me know it,” the president said.
“What I’ve done for African Americans, no president, I would say, has done,” Trump insisted.
“Now, I’ll say this. They are so happy, because I get the calls. They are so happy at what I’ve been able to do in Baltimore and other Democratic run corrupt cities. The money has been stolen. What they’ve done, it’s been wasted and it’s been stolen, billions and billions of dollars,” Trump told reporters. “And the African-American community is so thankful. They call me and they say, ‘Finally, somebody is telling the truth.’”
Trump added, according to the transcript, “[T]he African-American people have been calling the White House. They have never been so happy.”
