Trump Campaign’s Twitter Account Suspended For Spreading Dangerous COVID-19 Misinformation: Report

Twitter on Wednesday said it would require President Trump’s campaign account to remove a post containing coronavirus misinformation, banning the account from tweeting until it does so.

The social media giant said that Team Trump’s tweet of a video clip from a Fox News interview — in which President Trump said that children are “almost immune” from COVID-19 — violates the site’s rules against misinformation.

Twitter hid the post and said the account will not be able to tweet again until it deletes the post, although it can appeal the decision, reports The Washington Post.

Twitter spokeswoman Liz Kelley told the Post that the tweet “is in violation of the Twitter Rules on COVID-19 misinformation. The account owner will be required to remove the Tweet before they can Tweet again.”

Earlier in the day, Facebook said it had removed Trump’s post of the same video clip from a Fox News interview in which he said that children are “almost immune” from COVID-19.

“This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from Covid-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful Covid misinformation,” Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Stone added the specific comments that had run afoul of Facebook’s rules were Trump’s false claims about children being “almost immune” to the potentially deadly virus.

“If you look at children, children are almost — and I would almost say definitely — but almost immune from this disease,” and that they have stronger immune systems,” Trump said in the interview.

In June, Facebook removed ads run by the Trump campaign for using a Nazi symbol.
