On the same day President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Trump reportedly lashed out at then-acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, telling him to ask his wife how it feels to be a loser after she lost a bid for political office in Virginia, NBC News reported Monday.
Trump reportedly make the remarks during a phone call he placed to demand why Comey was allowed to fly on an FBI plane from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., after being fired.
McCabe told Trump that he hadn’t been asked about the flight but that he would have authorized it if he had.
NBC News reports:
The president was silent for a moment and then turned on McCabe, suggesting he ask his wife how it feels to be a loser — an apparent reference to a failed campaign for state office in Virginia that McCabe’s wife made in 2015.
McCabe replied: “OK, sir.” Trump then hung up the phone.
The new NBC News report comes just hours after it was reported that McCabe was stepping down as deputy director of the FBI amid repeated attacks by Trump and Republicans.
NBC News’ Carol Lee notes: “Well, certainly McCabe was taken aback by this phone call. We spoke to several people who he had told about it. You know, I think what this illustrates is it’s just another kind of data point into what this was like for McCabe serving under President Trump.”
