Trump Applauds Son’s ‘Transparency’ For Releasing Emails Minutes Before NY Times Published Them

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders read a brief statement from the president Tuesday defending his son in response to revelations that Trump Jr. agreed to hear damaging information on Hillary Clinton as part of the Russian government’s effort to help his father.

In the statement, President Donald Trump said his eldest son is “is a high-quality person and I applaud his transparency.”

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that it was about to publish the content of the emails and had sought comment from Trump Jr. when he released his emails with publicist Rob Goldstone on Twitter.

Trump Jr. tweeted the false claim that he was releasing the emails to be “totally transparent.”

The emails with Goldstone show that Trump Jr. was explicitly told that the information was part of “Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump” and that it could “incriminate” Clinton and her dealings with Russia.

Goldstone subsequently offered to set up a meeting with a “Russian government attorney” to discuss the information.

“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump,” Goldstone wrote in the email to Trump Jr.

“If it’s what you say I love it,” Trump Jr. replied, according to the email he released.
