Texas Gov Says Undocumented Immigrants Will Not Be Required To Show ID At Hurricane Shelters

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) reassured any persons, including those living in the U.S. illegally, can seek shelter in evacuation centers ahead of Hurricane Harvey without fear of deportation.

Gov. Abbott made the remarks during a discussion about hurricane shelters and the safety of undocumented immigrants with MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle.

Asked whether those in the U.S. illegally would be whether those in the U.S. illegally would be “asked for identification” at any hurricane shelters, Abbott responded: “it will not be an issue.”

“It’s my understanding, from what I saw from the border patrol instructions yesterday, that it will not be an issue,” the governor said.

“What everyone is focused on right now is ensuring all we can to protect life. We all have a high regard for life. We want to ensure the safety of all lives and we’re prepared to take all measures to do so.”

Hurricane Harvey is expected to make landfall near Corpus Christi, Texas later on Friday.

Harvey is currently a Category 3 hurricane and is expected to be the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 2005 and the first to hit Texas since 1999.
