Disturbing new photos obtained by CNN show children sleeping on the ground on rocks or with Mylar blankets at a Border Patrol station in McAllen, Texas
In one photo, a migrant child can be seen sleeping outside on dirt next to a baby bottle full of milk. Other photos show migrants walking around the facility, which has four temporary tents set up to accommodate an influx of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the news outlet.
“Nobody, no matter who you are, where you are from should spend an hour like this. This is the United States of America. Not in our country,” the source of the photos told the network.
“Border Patrol agents are doing everything they can to protect and care for migrants in their temporary custody. Border Patrol stations are simply not equipped to handle the number of families and children arriving along the southwest border, and we need Congress to act to provide immediate relief,” a Department of Homeland Security official told CNN.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan has testified before Congress that the government lacks the resources to detain all migrants crossing the border.
“The new waves of vulnerable populations arriving here and exacerbating the already urgent humanitarian security crisis at the border,” he told a House Appropriations subcommittee in April. “We don’t have room to hold them, we don’t have the authority to remove them fairly and expeditiously, and we are not likely — and they are not likely to be allowed to remain in the country at the end of their immigration proceedings. The status quo is not acceptable.”
