Sessions Fires Back At Trump: DOJ Investigations ‘Will Not Be Improperly Influenced By’ Politics

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was the first U.S. senator to endorse Trump during the 2016 race, fired back at President Trump in a rare statement Thursday, declaring that he has full control of the Justice Department and insisting that DOJ investigations “will not be improperly influenced by political considerations.”

“While I am Attorney General, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action,” Sessions said in one of his toughest statements to date following criticism from President Trump. “However, no nation has a more talented, more dedicated group of law enforcement investigators and prosecutors than the United States.”

Sessions’ statement came hours after President Trump’s latest attack on the attorney general for his recusal from matters related to the Russian investigation during an interview with “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning.

“I put in an attorney general that never took control of the Justice Department, Jeff Sessions,” Trump said in a taped interview that aired Thursday. “It’s an incredible thing.”

Trump told “Fox and Friends” that “Sessions shouldn’t have recused himself” or at least, “should have told me.”

“He took the job and then he said, ‘I’m going to recuse myself,'” the president said. “I said, ‘What kind of man is this?’ And by the way, he was on the campaign. The only reason I gave him the job, I felt loyalty. He was an original supporter.”
