Sen. Sinema Rips Rand Paul For ‘Irresponsible’ Behavior While Waiting For Coronavirus Test Results

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) ripped into GOP Sen. Rand Paul over reports that he attended the Senate gym and swam in the pool while awaiting his COVID-19 test results, which later came back positive.

“I’ve never commented about a fellow Senator’s choices/actions,” Sinema tweeted. “Never once.”

“This, America, is absolutely irresponsible,” Sinema added. “You cannot be near other people while waiting for coronavirus test results. It endangers others & likely increases the spread of the virus.”

Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) reportedly told colleagues during a Senate Republican lunch Sunday that Paul had gone to the gym and swam Sunday morning, which was also when he received his COVID-19 test results.

Paul became the first known senator to test positive for the virus Sunday morning.

A spokesman said Paul was asymptomatic and did not know of any infected person with whom he had come in contact.

“Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for COVID-19. He is feeling fine and is in quarantine. He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events,” Paul’s Deputy Chief of Staff Sergio Gor said in an email and tweet.

“He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person,” the statement continued. “He expects to be back in the Senate after his quarantine period ends and will continue to work for the people of Kentucky at this difficult time. Ten days ago, our D.C. office began operating remotely, hence virtually no staff has had contact with Senator Rand Paul.”
