Sen. Schiff Rips Trump For Attacks On Black Father: ‘How Can Someone In Such A Big Office Be So Small?’

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Sunday blasted President Trump for suggesting he should have left three UCLA basketball players in a Chinese jail after one player’s father did not adequately “lavish praise on him.”

“The President would have left American students in a foreign jail because their families didn’t lavish sufficient praise on him. How can someone in such a big office be so small?” Schiff tweeted.

President Trump escalated his increasingly authoritarian rhetoric in a tweet Sunday evening attacking LiAngelo Ball’s father, LaVar.

“Shoplifting is a very big deal in China, as it should be (5-10 years in jail), but not to father LaVar. Should have gotten his son out during my next trip to China instead. China told them why they were released. Very ungrateful!,” Trump tweeted on Sunday.

“Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!” Trump tweeted on earlier in the day.

Trump had asked last week whether the players would ever thank him for speaking to Chinese President Xi Jinping about securing their release before the players had an opportunity to thank him or apologize for their actions.

Hours later, the three players held a press conference to apologize for the incident and to thank Trump.

Rep. Ted Lieu blasted Trump’s attacks, writing: “Dear @realDonaldTrump: As public servants, we help people because it is the right thing to do, not because we want to be praised for it. Also, the US President should never wish for Americans to be locked up in a foreign jail.”
