Sen. Richard Blumenthal: ‘No Question’ Evidence Connects Manafort With Criminal Wrongdoing

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal said on Wednesday that the FBI’s raid late last month on former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s home directly connects Manafort to evidence of criminal wrongdoing in the ongoing investigation into the president’s campaign and Russia’s role in the 2016 election.

“Apparently there is now no question of clear evidence connecting Paul Manafort to some criminal wrong doing,” Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said in a statement.

“This highly significant step reaffirms the reasons that I first urged the appointment of a Special Counsel with the power to execute such investigative measures and bring criminal charges and redoubles my determination to protect this investigation from political interference,” he continued.

Earlier this week, Trump attacked Blumenthal on Twitter for his involvement in the Russia probe.

Blumenthal’s comments come after it was reported by the Washington Post that FBI agents working with Special Counsel Robert Mueller had a search warrant to seize materials from Manafort’s Alexandria, Va. residence, raiding his home last month.

The raid happened one day after he appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee to testify on the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.

Mueller has impaneled a Washington D.C. grand jury that has the power to indict if he decides criminal charges as appropriate.
