Sen. Graham Warns GOP Lawmakers: Donors’ ‘Financial Contributions Will Stop’ If Tax Cut Bill Fails

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) bluntly warned GOP lawmakers that donors will quit giving to Republicans if Congress fails to pass tax reform.

“The party fractures, most incumbents in 2018 will get a severe primary challenge, a lot of them will probably lose, the base will fracture, the financial contributions will stop, other than that it’ll be fine,” he said.

The senator’s prediction was reported by NBC News producer Frank Thorp V and later retweeted by Graham himself.

Earlier this week, Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) told a reporter, “My donors are basically saying, ‘Get it done or don’t ever call me again.'”

Last month, Graham also predicted that the Republican Party would lose control of Congress if they did not pass tax reform.

The GOP’s tax bill would add $1.7 trillion to the national debt over the course of a decade, and increase the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio by 5.9 percentage points, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
