Sanders Defends Trump’s Authoritarian Rant: Immigrants Don’t Need To See A Judge To Get Due Process

Sanders Defends Trump’s Authoritarian Rant: Immigrants Don’t Need To See A Judge To Get Due Process

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders defended President Trump’s authoritarian rant this weekend calling for undocumented immigrants to be deported without seeing an immigration judge, arguing that “just because you don’t see a judge doesn’t mean you aren’t receiving due process.”

Trump on Sunday tweeted: “We cannot allow all of these people to invade our Country. When somebody comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from where they came. Our system is a mockery to good immigration policy and Law and Order. Most children come without parents. Our Immigration policy, laughed at all over the world, is very unfair to all of those people who have gone through the system legally and are waiting on line for years! Immigration must be based on merit – we need people who will help to Make America Great Again!”

“Virtually all Americans agree that it makes no sense that an illegal alien sets one foot on American soil and then they would go through a three to five year judicial process to be removed from the country,” Sanders complained during Monday’s press briefing.

“Just because you don’t see a judge doesn’t mean you don’t receive due process,” Sanders added. “The president would like to see us stop people from illegally entering the country at all. The president would like us to secure the borders and have a very legal and easy immigration process so people can come here the right way.”

In response to Trump’s Sunday tweet, former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti, tweeted: “Thank goodness for the Constitution, which requires due process. The Constitution and our laws are the only thing standing between Trump and deprivations of our rights, which is why he tries to undermine the judiciary at every turn.”

Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe wrote: “Trump’s assertion of unreviewable power to serve as prosecutor, judge, and jury of every asylum-seeker’s claim of right to be here has no basis in our Constitution or laws. It is a power grab one would expect of a fascist dictator, beyond even George III.”

Former U.S. Ambassador Norm Eisen writes: “He’s trying to use the most vulnerable as a battering ram in his ongoing attack on the rule of law. But if he can deprive them of due process, American citizens will be next. How long before new chant at his rallies is “lock them all up”? Now is the time to hold the line.”

Ronald Klain, who served as a senior White House aide to Presidents Barack Obama, tweeted: “If Trump can deny due process to those allegedly here unlawfully, ICE can grab YOU, allege you aren’t a citizen & deport you w/out a hearing.”

He added: “To everyone who has tweeted back, “Not me, I can PROVE I’m a citizen” — you miss the point. Without due process, who will you “prove” it to? Where will you show your proof? A right to a hearing / judicial review protects ALL of us.”
