Retired Four-Star General Compares Trump To ‘Mussolini’ After Latest Authoritarian Move: ‘This Is Deadly Serious’

Retired four-star U.S. Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey on Friday ripped into the Trump White House for directing federal agencies to end their subscriptions to The New York Times and The Washington Post after President Trump said he did not want either news outlet in the White House.

“The White House Trump statement telling the entire Federal Government to terminate subscriptions to the NYT and Wash Post is a watershed moment in national history,” McCaffrey tweeted.

He suggested that the situation was no laughing matter.

“No room for HUMOROUS media coverage. This is deadly serious,” he explained.

“This is Mussolini,” McCaffrey declared.

When Trump proposed arresting Rep. Adam Schiff for treason earlier this month and hinted at the execution of the government whistleblower, McCaffrey tweeted: “There’s an aspect of Mussolini to all this. Dangerous. Slightly comical.”

The White House announced on Tuesday that it would cancel subscriptions to The Times and The Post less than a day after Trump told Fox News’s Sean Hannity that “we don’t even want it in the White House anymore” while referring to the Times.

“We’re going to probably terminate that and The Washington Post. They’re fake,” he said.
