Pro-Trump Radio Host Pushing False Claim That Black Mississippians Voted In Alabama Election

Senator-elect Doug Jones (D) pulled off a dramatic upset on Tuesday night by narrowly winning the Senate race in the deep-red state of Alabama, even as his Republican rival, Roy Moore, refuses to concede defeat.

Conservative radio host and vocal Trump supporter Bill Mitchell is attempting to delegitimize Jones’ electoral victory over Moore by spreading rumors of widespread voter fraud committed by black voters, despite the fact that Alabama has some of the strictest voter ID laws in the country.

“I am hearing rumors that black voters from MS were encouraged to cross over into AL and vote,” Mitchell said on Twitter. “Anyone else hearing this? Anything to it? That might explain the 30% turnout higher than population percentage. Just reporting the rumor.”

The rumor appears to have first appeared on Reddit last month in a thread posted by a user named “Warren4Prez.” The post appears to be an attempt to smear a Doug Jones victory.

One post reads: “African-Americans in Mississippi: we need you to make a short trip to Alabama on December 12 and vote against the right-wing Republican Senate candidate and child molester Roy Moore.”

Conservative celebrity Chuck Woolery, the former host of Love Connection, tweeted a fake news article with the same claim Mitchell tweeted about. He captioned the tweet: “Evidence of Voter Fraud in Alabama As Mobile County Results Come In Late.”

Other pro-Trump twitter users had theories of their own:
