Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon Meacham said Monday morning that President Trump has an “extraordinary number” of supporters who stand by everything he says no matter what, and would “walk off a cliff if Trump” told them to.
“Eight out of 10 Republicans put themselves in the position of agreeing with how Donald Trump handles race relations. How damning is that?” “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough asked Meacham during a discussion on MSNBC about Republican support for the way Trump handles race relations.
“My instinct would be this is a manifestation of this tribal commitment that we now have and so many people have to partisanship,” replied Meacham.
“And there are an extraordinary number of people who will walk off a cliff if Trump says that’s what we should do. And what we have to hope for is that … the cliff is not too high and it’s not too imminent.”
