A majority of Republicans say President Trump is a better leader than former President Abraham Lincoln, according to a recent poll.
Asked “Which Republican president was better?”, 53 percent of Republicans said Trump was a better president than Lincoln, while 47 percent chose the Civil War-era leader, according to this week’s Economist and YouGov weekly tracking poll.
Lincoln, who was the U.S. president between 1861 and 1865 and who steered America through the Civil War and abolished slavery, still overwhelmingly beats Trump among all Americans, 75 percent to 25 percent, with the vast majority of Democrats and independents choosing the former president.
Ninety-four percent of Democrats said Lincoln was the better president, as did 78 percent of independent voters. Overall, 75 percent of poll respondents picked Lincoln compared to 25 percent for Trump.
Other than Republicans, Lincoln was the choice president across all possible polling metrics—preferred by men and women, all age groups and races, as well as based on census region and household income.
The Economist/YouGov poll found that 87 percent of those in the GOP either somewhat or strongly approve of the job Trump is doing as president.
Trump in the past has boasted of his approval rating within the party, comparing his popularity to Lincoln’s.
“You know, a poll just came out that I am the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party,” Trump said in a July interview with The Sun newspaper in the U.K.
“Beating Lincoln,” Trump added, without clarifying to which poll he was referring. “I beat our Honest Abe.”
The Economist/YouGov weekly tracking poll surveyed 1,500 Americans from Nov. 24 to Nov. 26 and has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
The poll results were widely mocked on social media Friday night, prompting “53% of Republicans” to Trend across Twitter.
Actor Billy Baldwin—whose brother Alec famously portrays a caricature of Trump on Saturday Night Live—tweeted: “53% of Republicans apparently don’t even know who Abraham Lincoln was…”
