The Pentagon is set to present President Trump with a request to deploy 10,000 troops to the Middle East, as part of a possible response to increasing tension with Iran, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
U.S. officials told the news outlet it’s not clear if the White House will approve sending all or just some of the requested forces.
Officials say the troops will be defensive forces, and the discussions include additional Patriot missile batteries and more ships, reports The New York Post.
The Trump administration earlier this month deployed bombers and a U.S. aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf in response to unspecified threats from Iran.
On Tuesday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, briefed lawmakers on intelligence detailing recent actions by Iran, as President Trump and Republicans warn of a growing threat from Tehran.
