Pentagon Officials Not Sure Where Trump Got ‘Whimpering’ Detail In Graphic Baghdadi Raid Account

When President Trump announced Sunday morning that U.S. Special Operations forces had killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, he claimed the “world’s number one terrorist leader” was “whimpering and crying” in “panic” when U.S. forces closed in.

“He died like a dog, he died like a coward, he was whimpering, screaming and crying,” Trump told reporters. “And frankly, I think it’s something that should be brought out.”

But two days after the announcement, it’s still unclear where the president’s information on al-Baghdadi’s last moments came from.

Five senior Trump administration officials who watched the president’s Sunday morning victory lap each told The Daily Beast “that they had no idea where the president got the ‘whimpering and crying and screaming’ detail. Two officials recounted how after they heard that on Sunday, they immediately began messaging each other questions and comments like, ‘uh where is he getting that?’ ”

The Daily Beast reports that some Pentagon officials were “confused” by Trump’s comments, telling the news outlet there “was no way Trump could have heard Baghdadi’s voice on the Situation Room live stream Saturday night because it did not have audio.”

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley indicated to reporters on Tuesday that he did not know where Trump had heard details of the al-Baghdadi raid.

“I know the president had planned to talk down to the unit and unit members,” Milley said. “But I don’t know what the source of that was. I assume it was talking directly to unit and unit members.”

Milley added that he had not heard the same reports himself, becoming the second Pentagon official to cast doubt on the veracity of Trump’s claims about the terrorist leader in just two days after Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he did not have the same “details” of the raid shared by Trump.
