Lt. Greg Abbott, the Georgia police officer who was captured on video reassuring a white female driver he pulled over by telling her “we only kill black people,” will be fired, according to the department’s police chief.
Cobb County Police Chief Mike Register said Thursday, “There’s really no place for these types of comments in law enforcement,” adding that Abbott would be terminated, according to the New York Post.
The Hill added:
The footage, which was originally shot last year at a traffic stop, was leaked earlier this week and received widespread backlash.
In the video, Abbott is seen telling a nervous woman whom he pulled over for a traffic stop not to be scared and to put her hands down out of fear of being shot.
“You’re not black,” he said. “Remember, we only kill black people. Yeah, we only kill black people, right?” Abbott tells her.
“I feel that no matter what context you try to take those comments in, the statements were inexcusable and inappropriate,” Register said in a news conference. “Those comments have now caused the men and women who are currently working on the street today to go out and attempt to regain the public trust.”
“I’ve always perceived him to be an honorable man, but he made a mistake,” he added.
