Obama’s Travel Costs Over 8 Years: $97 Million. Trump’s Travel Costs After 10 Weeks In Office: $23 Million

Donald Trump’s frequent weekend getaways to his luxury Florida resort have already cost the U.S. taxpayers at least $24 million, roughly as much as Barack Obama spent on travel in the first two years of his presidency, reports the Independent.

Trump has spent seven weekends at Mar-a-Lago since taking office ten weeks ago. The Independent estimates that each of these trips costs at least $3 million.

Former President Barack Obama’s total travel bill over the eight years of his presidency came to $97 million. That averages out to about $12.1 million a year.

Trump spent about $10 million on three golfing holidays in his first month as president.

The New York Police Department has confirmed that it costs between $127,000 and $146,000 (£101,000 and £116,000) a day “to protect the First Lady and her son while they reside in Trump Tower”.

After he hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago this weekend, Trump will have averaged $2.4 million (£1.9 million) tax dollars a week on his Florida trips. If he keeps going at this pace, he will have outspent Obama’s $97 million figure in just ten months.

Critics have pointed out that if the President cut back on these visits, he could fund the social security and arts programs that he is planning to slash.

Last month, businesses in West Palm Beach claimed that Trump’s frequent visits to Mar-a-Lago were costing them tens of thousands of dollars.

“We are basically going broke,” said the owner of Southern Helicopters, who told the news station his choppers are grounded every time Trump arrives in the area. “We were not expecting to come down almost every weekend.”

The CEO of Stellar Aviation Group, Johnathan Miller, estimated that Trump’s trips have cost him $30,000 per weekend because of the no-fly zone implemented every time the President is in town.

“I don’t know if I could sustain heavy losses like that,” he said.

Mayor Paulette Burdick estimated Trump’s trips have cost his city about $1.7 million and is seeking reimbursement for the extra security costs.

“We’ve written a letter to the federal government, asking for the reimbursement for the sheriff for the impacts. But as of today, we haven’t heard back,” Burdick told NBC.

Before his run for President, Trump regularly took to Twitter to criticize Obama for playing golf while holding office.

“You know what – and I love golf – but if I were in the White House, I don’t think I’d ever see Turnberry again, I don’t think I’d ever see Doral again, I own Doral in Miami, I don’t think I’d ever see many of the places that I have,” Trump told his supporters during a campaign rally last year.

“I don’t ever think that I’d see anything, I just wanna stay in the White House and work my ass off, make great deals, right? Who’s gonna leave? I mean, who’s gonna leave?”
