Former President Barack Obama has fired back at President Donald Trump’s repeated demands that he and his former officials be indicted for “spying” on his campaign, a claim that has been repeatedly debunked.
Last month, Trump lashed out at Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden, claiming both men deserve to be sentenced to a 50-year prison sentence for “treason” because he falsely claims they “spied on my campaign trying to defeat me.”
“They spied on my campaign, and if they were Democrats they would have been in jail two years ago, they would have been in jail, literally, if this side were -the Democrat side, they would have been in jail two years ago for 50-year terms for treason and other things,” Trump angrily declared.
“They spied on my campaign, and that included Biden and Obama. They spied on my campaign trying to defeat me,” he falsely claimed. “They wrote up a fake dossier, that has proven to be totally fake, written by Christopher Steele, paid for by Hillary Clinton and the Democrats and they used that illegally in the FISA courts. If we did what they did, you would have many people in jail right now.”
“President Obama and Biden – Sleepy Joe, he knew everything that was happening – they were spying on my campaign and they got caught. Now let’s see what happens. But if this were the opposite way, people would have been jailed – they would have been in jail already for a period of at least – it would have started two years ago and it would have been for 50 years for treason,” Trump added.
In an interview with Tommy Vietor on Pod Save America Wednesday, Obama responded to Trump’s threats, saying: “The allegations are so absurd that even Republican-controlled committees looking into it have dismissed them, and Attorney General Barr has dismissed them.”
Obama added: “This is an example, I think, of a larger problem … one of the foundation stones in a democracy is the idea that you do not allow the politicization of the criminal justice system, the intelligence system, and the military.”
