Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte refuted President Donald Trump’s claim on Monday that tariffs against the European Union would be a “positive” step.
“If we do work it out that will be positive, and if we don’t, it will be positive also,” Trump said during a White House pool spray with Rutte in the Oval Office. “No,” Rutte quickly interjected.
“Just think about those cars that pour in here,” Trump continued.
“It’s not positive,” the Dutch prime minister insisted. “We have to work something out.”
TRUMP: “The EU… If we do work it out, that will be positive. And if we don’t, it will be positive also, because – ”
DUTCH PM RUTTE: “No.”
TRUMP: “— just think about those cars that pour in here.”
