New Zealanders Turn Out To Welcome Rex Tillerson’s Motorcade With A Sea Of Middle Fingers

US media traveling with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Tuesday for a visit with New Zealand’s prime minister, Bill English, and foreign minister, Gerry Browlee, were surprised by the number of people flipping the bird at Tillerson as his motorcade sped through town, reports Newsweek.

New York Times correspondent Gardiner Harris said he had been in a lot of motorcades but says he was taken back by the negative reception Tillerson received from New Zealanders.

“I’ve been in motorcades for a couple of years now … I’ve never seen so many people flip the bird at an American motorcade as I saw today,” Harris said.

US protection officers traveling with Tillerson were overheard joking about the “warm” Wellington welcome, Stuff.co.nz reported.

NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell offered a possible explanation for the hostile reception, tweeting that Tillerson was “greeted by people signaling thumbs down & display of middle fingers for quitting Paris.”

Roughly 200 protesters demonstrated outside of Parliament as part of an “unwelcome” event for Tillerson Tuesday.

GreenPeace New Zealand was also spotted taking part in the Anti-Tillerson protests:
