MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Compares Sanders Nevada Win To Nazi Invasion Of France

MSNBC host Chris Matthews is under fire for comparing Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) win in the Nevada caucuses to 1940 Nazi invasion of France, saying that it’s too late to stop the progressive senator and that it reminded him of the “fall of France in the summer of 1940.”

“I was reading last night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940,” Matthews said during MSNBC’s live coverage of the caucuses on Saturday.

He continued: “And the general, Reynaud, calls up Churchill and says, ‘It’s over.’ And Churchill says, ‘How can that be? You’ve got the greatest army in Europe. How can it be over?’ He said, ‘It’s over.'”

Sanders’ spokesman Mike Casca tweeted after the segment that he “never thought part of my job would be pleading with a national news network to stop likening the campaign of a jewish presidential candidate whose family was wiped out by the nazis to the third reich. but here we are.”

After Sanders’ strong showing in the Iowa caucuses, Matthews also expressed his skepticism of socialists, wondering whether Sanders would like to see people executed in Central Park.

Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Saturday warned that Sanders would be unable to beat President Trump, just hours after Sanders’ win.

Buttigieg used his concession speech to warn against a “rush to nominate Sen. Sanders,” casting him as a disaster in waiting for Democrats up and down the ballot.

I believe the only way to truly deliver any of the progressive changes we care about is to be a nominee who actually gives a damn about the effect you are having, from the top of the ticket, on those crucial, front-line House and Senate Democrats running to win, who we need to win, to make sure our agenda is more than just words on a page,” Buttigieg said.

“Sen. Sanders, on the other hand, is ignoring, dismissing, or even attacking the very Democrats we absolutely must send to Capitol Hill in order to keep Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, in order to support judges who respect privacy and democracy, and in order to send Mitch McConnell into retirement. Let’s listen to what those voices are telling us,” he said.
