Mitch McConnell Supporters Strangle Cardboard Cutout Of AOC During Group Photo

A photograph taken of a group of young white male supporters of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has sparked backlash online.

The Instagram photograph, taken Saturday at the Fancy Farm, Kentucky political picnic, shows the supporters posing next to a cardboard cutout of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

One of the men can be seen pretending to grab a hold of the cutout’s throat to look as if he was strangling the congresswoman.

McConnell was also criticized this weekend after his reelection campaign put up a tombstone-shaped sign at the same campaign event with the name of his Democratic challenger “Amy McGrath” and the date of her death listed as the 2020 election.

McConnell’s campaign tweeted a photo of the tombstones and called McConnell the “Grim Reaper of Socialism,” just hours after a 21-year-old white male opened fire inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring dozens more.

President Obama’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court “Merrick Garland” and the word “socialism” was also printed on the cardboard tombstones.

McConnell’s challenger said the death imagery is troubling — especially in wake of the recent mass shootings.

“Hours after the El Paso shooting, Mitch McConnell proudly tweeted this photo,” McGrath tweeted. “I find it so troubling that our politics have become so nasty and personal that the Senate Majority Leader thinks it’s appropriate to use imagery of the death of a political opponent (me) as messaging.”

Jamal Raad, communications director for Democratic presidential candidate and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, also called out the McConnell campaigns “grim reaper” tweet.
