A Kampgrounds of America Inc. employee was filmed on Sunday holding a handgun while confronting a black Mississippi couple walking through a park with their dog Sunday, The Clarion-Ledger reported.
In the video, a woman wearing a KOA t-shirt and holding a gun in her right hand demands that the couple leave because they didn’t have a reservation, WCBI reported.
The couple said they were told at the front office they did not need a reservation to be at the lake.
“All you had to do is tell us you have to have a reservation and we would have left,” said the woman filming the video. “You didn’t have to pull a gun.”
“Well I’m just telling you — you need to leave because it’s under private ownership,” she said as she put her handgun back into her pocket. “You can’t be out here.”
Kampgrounds of America (KOA), the world’s largest company with privately held campground, released the following statement:
“KOA Inc. is aware of the situation that occurred Sunday, May 26th at the KOA franchise in Starkville, Mississippi. KOA is currently looking into the matter and reaching out to all of the parties involved. Kampgrounds of America prides itself on providing a welcoming, safe environment for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.”
