McCain Slams Trump: Calling Journalists ‘Fake News’ Is ‘Harmful’ And ‘Empowers Repressive Regimes’

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) ripped President Trump on Wednesday for repeatedly attacking journalists and labeling media outlets as “fake news,” warning it “empowers repressive regimes to jail reporters & silence the truth.”

In a Wednesday afternoon tweet, McCain shared a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists that finds a record number of journalists were imprisoned in 2017. The group found that 262 journalists worldwide have been imprisoned this year in retaliation over their work.

[email protected]’s annual report shows record # of journalists imprisoned worldwide in 2017, including 21 on “fake news” charges,” McCain tweeted. “@POTUS must understand his harmful rhetoric only empowers repressive regimes to jail reporters & silence the truth.”

A Politico report published last week found that authoritarian leaders or state media in at least 15 countries use President Trump’s favorite “Fake News” refrain to quell dissent, question human rights violations and delegitimize the media in their own countries.

The publication found that authoritarian leaders in countries including Turkey, Syria, Venezuela and the Philippines have used the phrase to fire back at media reports.
