Kentucky GOP State Lawmaker Commits Suicide After Denying Sexual Assault Allegations: Report

Kentucky GOP State Lawmaker Commits Suicide After Denying Sexual Assault Allegations: Report

A Kentucky GOP state representative has reportedly committed suicide following allegations he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl, according to in Louisville.

Rep. Dan Johnson reportedly shot and killed himself on a bridge in Mt. Washington, Ky., according to WDRB.

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting (KCIR) published a report on Monday detailing allegations that Johnson sexually assaulted a 17-year-old friend of his daughter after a New Year’s Eve Party in 2012.

Johnson held a press conference at the Heart of Fire Church on Tuesday where he claimed Richmond’s story was “totally false” and politically motivated.

“There’s no perfect people,” Johnson said. “This allegation concerning this lady, this young girl, absolutely has no merit”

“I don’t want to blast this girl, I have compassion for her,” he insisted.

He also said the accusation was part of a scheme to attack Republicans running for office, invoking Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, who is currently facing accusations from multiple women of sexual misconduct.

“I don’t think in every case women lie. Not at all. I think it is the season. Last election it seemed to be racism. This one seems to be sexual impropriety,” he said. “If the police or anyone involved had thought that this was a real case, don’t you think they would have pursued that? There is no way they would have let up if they thought there was something to it.”

The Hill reports:

Johnson also acknowledged that he messaged the woman on Facebook in January 2013, saying that he did not remember what happened the night of the alleged encounter and that he had been “drugged” at a local bar. He said later on that he did remember what happened that night, and denied ever entering the room where the girls were sleeping.

Johnson had faced calls to resign from his state House seat after KCIR published their expose on Monday.

Shortly before his suicide, WDRB reports that Johnson posted the following message on his Facebook page just before 5 p.m. Wednesday:

Gov. Matt Bevin tweeted a statement Wednesday night, saying his “heart breaks for (Johnson’s) family.”
