Kanye West Abruptly Withdraws From Politics: ‘I’ve Been Used To Spread Messages I Don’t Believe In’

Rapper Kanye West, one of President Trump’s fiercest celebrity allies, has vowed to distance himself from politics after he says he was “used to spread messages” he “doesn’t believe in.”

In a pair of tweets on Tuesday, West denied that he designed the “Blexit” T-shirts, an amalgam word for “Black Exit,” urging black people to abandon the Democratic Party. The movement, spearheaded by Turning Point USA’s director of communications Candace Owens, describes itself as “a frequency for those who have released themselves from the political orthodoxy. It is a rebellion led by Americans wishing to disrupt the simulation of fear. Blexit is a renaissance. It is our formal declaration of independence.”

The merchandise, which proudly touts “Design by Kanye West,” was distributed at the Turning Point USA’s Young Black Leadership Summit on Saturday.

Owens shared an image of the shirts and touted West’s involvement.

“Blexit is a renaissance and I am blessed to say that this logo, these colors, were created by my dear friend and fellow superhero Kanye West,” Owens said.

Kanye fired back on Twitter, writing: “I introduced Candace to the person who made the logo and they didn’t want their name on it so she used mine. I never wanted any association with Blexit. I have nothing to do with it. My eyes are now wide open and now realize I’ve been used to spread messages I don’t believe in. I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative !!!”

West clarified some of his political beliefs in a series of tweets earlier Tuesday, saying he supports prison reform, job creation, common-sense gun laws and “holding people who misuse their power accountable.”

West delivered an expletive-filled rant in front of President Trump and members of the press during an Oval Office meeting earlier this month.

During their meeting, West was sporting a bright red “make America great again” baseball cap.
