White House chief of staff John Kelly secretly asked Republican lawmakers to officially rebuke President Trump for his controversial remarks during a press conference with Vladimir Putin, according to a bombshell new report.
Three sources told Vanity Fair on the condition of anonymity that Kelly was furious after Trump sided with Putin’s denial that Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election instead of the assessment of the U.S. intelligence community that Russia did intervene in an effort to help Trump win over his Democratic opponent.
Trump also blamed special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation for keeping the U.S. and Russia “separate.”
The Hill adds:
Kelly told Trump that his remarks might worsen the situation with Mueller, according to Vanity Fair, which reported that the chief of staff then called Republicans on Capitol Hill and told them they could publicly speak out against Trump’s comments.
It’s unclear who anonymously spoke to Vanity Fair for its report, and the White House did not respond to a request for comment on the report.
