Ivanka Trump has hired high-powered criminal defense lawyer Abbe Lowell to counsel both her and husband Jared Kushner with legal and ethical advice on the ongoing Russia investigation, according to the National Law Journal.
Lowell is the head of the white collar crime division of the D.C.-based law firm Norton Rose Fulbright. His past clients include lobbyist Jack Abramoff, as well as former Sen. John Edwards.
The Hill notes:
While the president’s daughter has not been investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller in the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, Kushner testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session on Monday.
Trump followed Kushner in adding Lowell to his counsel after the two previously retained attorney Jamie Gorelick to advise them through government mandated disclosure requirements regarding potential conflicts of interest with the Trump family’s businesses and their roles in the administration. Both lawyers will now advise Trump throughout the investigation.
Ira Sorkin, the lawyer known for his defense of the famous Ponzi-schemer Bernie Madoff, said hiring the defense lawyer was a good move.
“You have to be ready to go just in case Mr. Mueller says he needs something,” he said. “My own feeling is that every individual working in the administration is going to have to get their own lawyer. It’s just the right [thing] to do.”
