Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday blasted new “outrageous and idiotic” U.S. sanctions against Tehran’s top officials, slamming the Trump White House as “afflicted by mental retardation.”
“The White House is afflicted by mental retardation and does not know what to do,” Rouhani said during a live televised report, according to The Associated Press.
The Trump administration on Monday hit Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking Iranian leaders with new sanctions.
Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office that he said will deny the supreme leader and others access to financial instruments.
“The supreme leader of Iran is one who ultimately is responsible for the hostile conduct of the regime,” Trump said. “He’s respected within his country. His office oversees the regime’s most brutal instruments.”
The AP notes that Rouhani mocked the sanctions against Khamenei, an 80-year-old Shiite cleric who has no plans to ever travel to the United States.
When announcing the sanctions on Monday, Trump referred to the wrong ayatollah, reports USA Today.
“Sanctions imposed through the executive order that I’m about to sign will deny the Supreme Leader and the Supreme Leader’s Office, and those closely affiliated with him and the office, access to key financial resources and support. The assets of Ayatollah Khomeini and his office will not be spared from the sanctions,” Trump said at the signing of an executive order to impose the sanctions.
The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was Iran’s Supreme Leader from 1979 to 1989. Khomeini died in 1989 and was succeeded by the current Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
